that guya stuff does look better - what did you end up using to edit your video? what did you export the video as (and with what parameters)?
you could also just try uploading the video directly out of your camera without any edits to youtube just to see how it looks without any eiditing/conversion.
The program I was using Avidemux, has very few inputs that I needed to make, I thought that would be a good thing. I set it to output as a .mp4 with (I think) AVC.264 codec (I don't know if that's codec or not, just tried to match stuff that youtube said it liked with the stuff in the program). It didn't ask for frame rate or aspect ratio or anything.
I downloaded the trial of Sony Vegas and I messaged that guy that made the dunes video and he said he'd send me screen shots of his rendering settings. He also made another video that is really sweet of Las Vegas Motorspeedway:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rO4Z7JuEnUgHe said he put the gopro footage directly into Vegas and edited. With my wimpy computer I won't be doing much other than trimming beginning and end so hopefully this will work.
Edit: Here's a link the guy who made the video above gave me that shows his render settings in Sony Vegas
