Right now I'm set up standard shift but I can definitely see the advantage of GP shifting. But I'm hesitant since I won't be able to practice the new shift pattern on the street and get used to it. I could see myself at redline on a straight and grabbing 2nd instead of 4th  . If you've done the conversion how long did it take you to get used to it? Any oops moments? And I guess to go along with it, how many of you clutchless upshift? I've read over and over that it is fine (they say Diet Dr. Pepper tastes like the real thing too) but I've only done it a few times because I'm not racing and figure its got to be easier on the tranny to use the clutch.

i can see GP being better for certain turns at certain tracks, but honestly standard has never really been a bother and it hasnt slowed me down so im just sticking with it

both of my bikes are set up GP and I find it easier to up shift coming off a turn.
i almost always clutcheless upshift, track and street.
i don't think there is a "right" answer. your bike should be pretty easy to switch back and forth - give it a try and see what you think.

I've used standard shift all my riding life and I'm not changing now. If it's good enough for Mladin, Biaggi, Vermuelin, and Walker, it's good enough for me! I don't use the clutch when upshifting. I don't think it will cause damage to the tranny and it's easier on the clutch. Funny, on the MX bike I would keep it pinned, and just quickly fan the clutch when shifting. On the street bike it's no clutch and a quick move on the throttle...

Interesting, consensus on clutchless upshifts. Regarding the GP shift, I think I'm going to try it and see if I like it. I'm just pretty good at breaking things  so I'll have to pay extra attention.

I tried the clutchless upshift, but the Kawi is known for bad transmissions and it seemed really clunky, so I still clutch even on those.

nate, if you do it right it should be fine - if you are gp (i think you are?) just put a little bit of weight on the shifter to sort of pre-load it, roll off and add just enough pressure to let the shift go through and get back on.
people bang the piss out of their shifters, you can see guys do that, like they are actually putting their full wight on the peddal - never really understood why..

It doesn't take much to get used to the GP but give it a fair shot if you're going to try it. You will miss shift a few times for sure. My track bike is GP and my street bike is std. I have a hard time going back to std when I'm on the track now. I seem to miss shift more often trying to go back to std than I did switching to GP the first time.
